Amino Acids required to Increase Cognitive Performance and Brain Function

Amino acids are biologically vital natural compounds. They consist of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. They contain amine and carboxyl functional group. It is the particular R side-chain that leads to differentiation between amino acids. Around one-fifth of the human body is comprised of protein. A large extent of our cells, muscles, and tissues are made up of amino acids. Proteins are vital for every single organic process that occurs in our body. Amino acids are the building squares of it.


Amino acids have an impact on the functions of arteries, ligaments and various organs. They are necessary in transportation, removal of waste products and storage of nutrients. Along with this, amino acids play an integral part in the repairing tissue. They are utilized for healing wounds and strengthening bones, skin as well as hair.


Amino acids are essential for our brain function and performance. They also help us use the learning gained by mental procedures in our brains. A number of activities are controlled by the brain, which is possible only because of amino acids. These activities can be both voluntary and involuntary. Some examples of these activities are perception, emotion, memory, temperament and our observation.


Consider the example of amino acid tryptophan. If it's level of existence is increased or decreased it affects the brain functions. Its deficiency can cause an alteration in the mood of people. It increases both depression and aggression of that person. Along with this, it also affects the intellectual ability of that person. However, if this amino acid is given in large doses to a person, it has proven to reduce the sensitivity of pain. It also increases the level of dizziness. A standout amongst the effects of the levels of tryptophan in our body is an increase in mental exhaustion. Tryptophan is similar to some particular tranquilizers. These similarities are based on the impacts of excitement and sharpness of the brain. Tryptophan has an association with brain serotonin concentration. Serotonin, in turn, influences the state of mind, memory and social conduct. It also leads to an increase in craving for food and sex.


Another example is of tyrosine. Tyrosine is one of the standard amino acids but is not considered to be an essential amino acid. According to various studies done over the years, it also has some behavioral effects. It affects the transmission of nerve impulses between neurons. Tyrosine is the precursor of dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Norepinephrine plays a vital role in the reaction of the brain to stress. Changes in temperature, exposure to electric shocks and other forms of stress all increase the brain activity. Dopamine is also involved in the intense reaction to different stressors.


When people come in contact with stressors, this is when the importance of amino acids come into play. Stressors include for instance electric shocks, low or high temperature, and mental stress. The significance of amino acids increases in extreme circumstances. This is when they boost cognitive performance and brain function.
